Every month we put a special employee in the spotlight at Flexspecialisten. Someone who excels in dedication and motivation. This time we give the floor to Sebastiaan Beyer: apprentice butcher at Van der Zee Horeca Slagerij in Venlo and our flex worker of the month. What makes him so special? You can read that in his own words - from his first steps in the catering business to his dream of becoming a fully-fledged butcher. Meet Sebastiaan, a real professional in the making with a passion for quality.

Mijn naam is Sebastiaan Beyer en ik ben 34 jaar oud, sinds oktober ben ik werkzaam bij Van der Zee Horeca Slagerij in Venlo als leerling-slager. Sinds die tijd ben ik volop bezig met leren, snijden, klanten helpen en de winkel netjes houden. Geen dag is hetzelfde – en juist die afwisseling maakt dit werk zo leuk. 

When I heard I was employee of the month, I was really surprised. I didn't even know that existed! I just do my job, always try to be on time and go the extra mile when necessary. Apparently this is being noticed, which is of course very nice. 

What do I enjoy most? Especially the contact with customers - helping them with their questions about meat or how to prepare something. And of course the dry age cabinet, I love that. It's special to dry age yourself and experience that process up close. 

I once started in the hospitality industry through my uncle, who had a restaurant. There I started in the dishes, but I loved seeing how happy people got from good food. That passion has always remained and eventually brought me here. 

On days when I have classes, I learn a lot about the craft. For example, I'll never forget the day we had to bone a whole animal - impressive work that really makes you feel the craft. I am now in the first year of my butcher training and hope to be a full-fledged butcher in a few years. 

In my free time, I like to hike and cook, and I like to find houseplants with my girlfriend. This balance keeps me on my toes and gives me energy. 

I'm proud of what we do here at Van der Zee: we're customer-oriented, think with you and go the extra mile. And that recognition as employee of the month? I will celebrate it tonight with a drink in the sun!
