Een dag in oranje: Koningsdag door de ogen van internationale collega’s

Jaarlijks wordt op 27 april Koningsdag gevierd ter ere van de verjaardag van de koning. Deze feestdag werd voorheen op 30 april gevierd als Koninginnedag, ter ere van de verjaardag van de voormalige koningin Beatrix. Tijdens Koningsdag worden er in het hele land festiviteiten georganiseerd. Het is een dag waarop wij Nederlanders hun nationale trots tonen en de kleur oranje overal te zien is. Bij Flexspecialisten hebben we diverse nationaliteiten in dienst. We vragen aan twee collega’s wat zij weten over Koningsdag.

Waar kom je vandaan?

Marcin: I am from Kielce in Poland, this city is about 100 kilometers north of Krakow.

Denisa: I’m from Targoviste, a city very close to Bucharest.

Hoelang woon je al in Nederland?

Marcin: I have been living in the Netherlands for a year and a half now.

Denisa: I’ve been living in the Netherlands for almost 4 years.

Wat is jouw baan bij Flexspecialisten?

Marcin: I work as a Flex support employee.

Denisa: I work as Recruitment Manager for Work Force.

Wat weet je over Koningsdag?

Marcin: This is a day when you Dutch people show your national pride, in reality all Dutchies are going crazy having fun. This day is a good opportunity to have a joyful time together out in the city.

Denisa: I know that it’s one of the biggest holidays in The Netherlands when the king Willem Alexander’s birthday is celebrated on 27^th April and everyone is proudly wearing orange or the Dutch flag. I also know that at this time there are a lot of flea markets around each city.

Koningsdag tradities

Koningsdag  is een dag van vele tradities, zo zijn er in veel plaatsen vrijmarkten. Ook worden er diverse grote evenementen georganiseerd. Daarnaast bezoekt de koninklijke familie jaarlijks een gemeente in het land. In deze gemeente worden dan diverse traditionele activiteiten georganiseerd, één van de raarste activiteiten is wc-pot gooien. Hier zie je een foto van onze koning Willem-Alexander, die meedeed aan zo’n wc-pot-gooi-wedstrijd.

Heb je wel eens Koningsdag gevierd?

Marcin: Last year I was in Eindhoven as well as ‘s-Hertogenbosch to see what’s going on and was blown away by how people can get away from their normal life that day. Extraordinary activities are seen at every corner like putting out loud speakers in the middle of the street. However being sober I felt like landing in the other dimension, haha.

Denisa: Yes, I celebrated Koningsdag before and it was nice and fun. I haven’t seen the crazy traditional activities like the toilet bowl-throwing contest though, but now I know that I must see this.

Oranje tompoezen

Traditioneel gezien worden er jaarlijks veel oranje tompoezen gegeten tijdens Koningsdag. Maar wat is de oorsprong van deze oranje variant? Het komt voort uit een traditie, begonnen in 1967. Bij een geboorte van een kind wordt vrijwel altijd beschuit met roze of blauwe muisjes gegeten. Toen koning Willem-Alexander geboren werd, vierde het koningshuis dit niet alleen met de welbekende blauwe muisjes, maar ook met de oranje tompoes. Sindsdien wordt het van oorsprong roze gebakje ieder jaar massaal gegeten op Koningsdag (voorheen op Koninginnedag).

Heb je wel eens een (oranje) tompoes gegeten?

Marcin: I have eaten it and besides the obvious visual difference it is very similar to Polish “Karpatka” cake, maybe tompoezen is less curved and a little more sweet because of the topping, but basically this is similar type of culinary experience.

Denisa: Yes, I had to try them because I love sweets in general and I loved it because it is very similar to a Romanian cake called “cremșnit”.

Polen en Roemenië zijn beide geen monarchie, maar een parlementaire republiek. Zijn er in jullie thuisland bijzondere nationale feestdagen?

Marcin: The 11^th November is an Independence day to cheer for Poland Independence recovered after 123 years of no-existence at the day finishing the World War I, This is a day when outside Marches and parades take place, but it is more serious, formal and less entertainment oriented.

The 3rd May the National Day of Constitution. Poland has had as a first in Europe and second in the World (just after U.S.)  its Constitution stated. That day there are usually taking place National pride parades. But to be honest most of the people celebrate it as a part of long weekend 1-3rd May, which for example this year together with the weekend creates 5 day off if you take one day holiday for 02nd May. So most of Poles have first spring leisure time at that period barbecuing and meeting with friends and families within that period.

Denisa: Romania actually used to be a monarchy until 30^th of December 1947, when King Michael, at 26 years old, was forced to abdicate and leave the country.

The most important national holiday for us is Romania’s National day. This is the celebration of the unification of Transylvania, Basarabia, and Bucovina with the Romanian Kingdom. This happened on December 1st, in 1918. The country celebrates with free concerts and army parades in every city, along with traditional dishes.
