Flex Worker of the Month for May

Every month at Flexspecialisten , we shine a spotlight on Flexspecialisten special employee. Someone who excels in dedication and motivation. This time, we’re giving the floor to Sebastiaan Beyer: an apprentice butcher at Van der Zee Horeca Slagerij in Venlo our flex employee of the month. What makes him so special? You can read about it in his own words—from his first steps in the hospitality industry to his dream of becoming a fully-fledged butcher. Meet Sebastiaan, a true craftsman in the making with a passion for quality.
Sebastiaan speaks
My name is Sebastiaan Beyer and I’m 34 years old. I’ve been working Venlo an apprentice butcher at Van der Zee Horeca Slagerij in Venlo since October. Since then, I’ve been busy learning the ropes, cutting meat, helping customers, and keeping the shop tidy. No two days are the same—and it’s that variety that makes this job so enjoyable.
When I heard I was Employee of the Month, I was really surprised. I didn’t even know such a thing existed! I just do my job, try to be on time, and go the extra mile when needed. Apparently, people notice that, and that’s really nice, of course.
What do I like best? Mainly interacting with customers—helping them with their questions about meat or how to prepare it. And of course, the dry-aging cabinet; I love that. It’s special to dry-age meat myself and witness that process up close.
I first got into the restaurant business through my uncle, who owned a restaurant. I started out washing dishes, but I loved seeing how happy good food made people. That passion has always stayed with me and is what eventually brought me here.
On the days I have class, I learn a lot about the trade. For example, I’ll never forget the day we had to bone an entire animal—an impressive task that really gives you a sense of the craft. I’m currently in my first year of butchery training and hope to be a fully qualified butcher in a few years.
In my free time, I enjoy hiking and cooking, and I like to go houseplant shopping with my girlfriend. That balance keeps me sharp and gives me energy.
I’m proud of what we do here at Van der Zee: we’re customer-focused, we think proactively, and we go the extra mile. And being named Employee of the Month? I’m celebrating that tonight with a drink in the sunshine!
