Growth & Development: from intern to Account Manager

Every career starts with taking that first step in the right direction. For Merijn, that step was at Avans, where he first came into contact withFlexspecialisten. What began as an introductory meeting through his program quickly became the starting point for an internship and, later, even his return as an Account Manager.
His start as an intern
Merijn came into contact withFlexspecialisten through his studies at Avans.Flexspecialisten to the partnership between Avans andFlexspecialisten , he was invited for an interview with Luuk and Robin. “That first interview felt right from the start,” he says. “It was open and honest, and I immediately felt confident that I could learn a lot here.”
He was invited to a second interview with the Account Management Manager, again alongside Luuk. During the interview, they discussed an internship that perfectly aligned with his interests: marketing and account management. It was a combination that immediately sparked his enthusiasm. That’s how he began his career atFlexspecialisten.
What he didn't know at the time was that a second chapter was still in store for him.
After his internship, they stayed in touch. When a position for an Account Manager opened up, Luuk reached out to him again. “We just went out for a cup of coffee, with no expectations on either side.” But that conversation went so well that, two weeks later, MerijnFlexspecialisten through the doors ofFlexspecialisten once more—this time to start as an Account Manager.
A soft landing
My first few months as an Account Manager felt familiar right away.Flexspecialisten a warm and welcoming organization. I felt right at home.”
During his first few weeks, he was bombarded with new information, but thanks to a clear and structured onboarding process, all the procedures were explained step by step. His colleagues were always there to offer advice or lend a hand. “The support was excellent from day one. That gave me the confidence I needed to really grow in my role.”
Although he was already familiar with the organization from his internship, there were challenges as well. In particular, gathering and applying all the information he needed as an Account Manager required a lot of adjustment at first. “Sometimes I had to figure out how to approach a situation. But thanks in part to the guidance of other Account Managers, I progressed quickly.”
And one thing turned out to be a huge advantage: during his internship, Merijn learned that you should never be afraid to ask questions. “Everyone is willing to help. That’s really what makesFlexspecialisten so great.”
Growth through international dialogue
In his role, Merijn really excelled at customer interaction: building relationships, managing expectations, and collaborating with a wide range of clients. But one skill stood out above the rest: his English.
“A year ago, I mostly spoke basic English. Now I communicate with customers in English every day, both verbally and in writing. I’ve really grown in that area.”
The moment when he really felt the company’s growth? The annual customer event.
“I spoke with several clients there about their expectations for the coming year. I felt confident and in control, and I realized I had really made progress.”
Flexspecialisten actively Flexspecialisten that growth. The onboarding program is clearly structured, and Merijn also uses a Development Matrix to focus on goals, skills, and personal growth. “That helps me stay focused and improve step by step.”
Looking ahead
Merijn looks to the future with ambition. Over the next 6 to 12 months, he wants to develop into an independent account manager who has a complete grasp of all processes. He also wants to continue improving his English skills and, ultimately, learn more about managing a team.
He also envisions a future in which he can pass on his knowledge. “In the long term, I think it would be great to mentor new account managers. I know how valuable good guidance is. I’d like to pass that experience on.”
When he looks back on his first few months, there is one lesson that stands out most to him:
“Have confidence in yourself. Keep setting goals and keep challenging yourself. That way, you’ll continue to grow—both as a person and as a professional.”
